What Do You Want to Do with Your Life?
Welcome to my blog! It’s pretty awesome, I know. But enough chitchat. I’m on a mission! If you are experiencing a personal or professional crisis, deciding where to go next in life, feeling stuck, or simply want to be more creative, this blog is for you. Each of us has a unique purpose in life. Most of us don’t realize it, though, because we’ve been pushed to conform to someone else’s idea of who we should be. Step by step, this blog will take you through the different stages of the hero’s journey so that you may discover your true calling, build the courage to go after your dreams, persist through setbacks, and accomplish your aims.
Yeah, it’s a big promise, I know, but I think we can do it, don’t you? I’ve got a good track record.
MY STORY Years ago when I was a psychology professor, students lined up outside my office to ask me what they should major in or where they should go to graduate school. It turns out I was offering radically different advice from their parents and other professors. My colleague across the hall told one of our brightest seniors to go to the best graduate school she could, even though it meant moving to the east coast and leaving her fiancé behind. She came to my office in tears. A miserable electrical engineering major told me his father wouldn’t let him go into psychology because there was no money in it.
My advice was simple. I always told my students to follow their hearts.
One afternoon as I watched yet another relieved face disappear out my office door, I realized I wasn’t following my own heart. I felt deeply empty, despite my success. What did I really want to do when I grew up? I wanted to sing in a rock-n-roll band.
“Ridiculous,” a voice that sounded a lot like my mother’s screamed inside my head. For one, it would mean I had wasted four years at Princeton getting my PhD in psychology. For another, I was too old. How could I change now, wasn’t it too late?
I kept thinking about how happy my students were whenever I gave them permission to be their true selves. Within a year, I left my solid teaching position to follow my dream to be a rock-n-roll star! I’d only written a handful of songs at the time, but I knew if I didn’t do it then, I never would. My songs have been on the charts, and I’ve led creativity workshops for 17 years and helped thousands of participants to realize their dreams, too.
Now that’s my true calling. What’s yours? You don’t know, you say? You’re not sure? That’s OK.
Pretend I’m someone who matters to you, and I give you permission to be your authentic self. Sure, I’m your fairy godmother. Why not? Picture me waving a magic wand over you right now and telling you, “You can have anything you want.” You look down startled to discover you’ve instantly grown a pair. What would you do next with this new bravado? What kind of life would fill you with joy? It doesn’t matter whether it seems attainable or even downright crazy. Giving yourself permission to daydream about a rich and fulfilling life is the first step towards getting it. Close your eyes and let a picture settle in.
Where does your mind take you when you set your soul free? Tell me. I’d really like to know!

Great blogging, Michelle! Very down to earth, simulating, and inspiring. And I love the use of the Joseph Campbell material.
Thank you Linda! I’ve been studying Joseph Campbell for years and love applying his powerful lessons to our everyday lives.
Great message! When we follow our hearts, we bring light to the world and inspire others to embrace their dreams as well.
Yes, I love that Marianne Williamson quote: “And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.” So very true!
Very uplifting blog Michelle! You light up in print just like you light up a room in person!
Wow, Jim thanks so much. That’s good to know since I’m trying to reach people I may never meet in person.
Your creativity blog is off to a nice start. I look forward to reading more. Your ideas helped me a lot in some of those early workshops you taught many years ago now. Looking back, I see all the synchronicities that could not be evident at the time in the moment. Only in hindsight do they become clear. Today, I can connect all the dots from there to here. It appears you are going to use the hero’s journey, as related by Campbell, as one of your defining structures for this blog. I think that’s a powerful way to approach the topic. Learning to think within a mythical framework has been a part of my journey, too.
Thanks Bill. I loved having you in my workshops and watching you grow. I know what you mean about connecting the dots later. That’s why I like using the hero’s journey as a road map to help pinpoint where we are. Thanks for your support!
Wow, Michelle, I really like your blog! More than anything, I love the simple, down to earth, honest way in which you tell your own story and encourage us to explore our own. What you are offering is something that so many people need and are hungry for, and it’s wonderful to see you not missing the opportunity to connect with them by couching your words in esoteric gobbily-gook! :o)
I am so proud of you, Michelle…YOU DID IT!!!! As the song says…”I’m gonna let it shine, let it shine…that little light of mine!!!
We all have that light inside us…that which you refer to as our authentic self. We must reach inside and re-kindle that light. This lights up “The Spirit” and when others come in contact with us shining our light, it becomes contagious and grows among all those we come in contact with. We must give ourselves permission to allow that little light within us to shine!
Michelle, I am with you all the way!! Keep it up and all those reading Michelle’s blog, keep up the comments!
Thanks Frank! I try to avoid esoteric gobbily-gook every chance I get. I’ve never seen it motivate anyone to make positive changes in their lives! 🙂
Thanks Barbie, I’m glad you liked the blog, and I agree that the spark in each of us can spread to others and be contagious in a good way. When one of us starts being authentic, it liberates us all. Big hug to you!
This is fantastic!!!! Exactly what I needed to read also at this moment. Kinda weird. I really needed to read this right now.
Michelle, I’m so glad you’re blogging! You have so much to offer. I will be a regular reader! All my love and encouragement!
Maria, I’m so glad this spoke to you! And Laurie, thanks for all your support. It took me a year to work up the courage to start this blog. I finally did it!
Nice Michelle! Enjoyed your blog very much.
Your positive and inspiring spirit and energy is refreshing, and will touch many. You have much to give so keep it coming.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Pat. You’re very welcome. I have to say that everyone who has posted here inspires me as well. What a wonderful tribe!
When I set my soul free, I see myself making a wonderful living as a freelance writer, and having more time to myself to pursue projects of interest. If imaging your new life is the first step…wonder what’s the second?
Your story is very inspiring. I can’t wait to read more.
Hi Hannah, I think you have a book in you too. At least one! Next steps are discovering what stands in your way, and developing the courage to move forward. I’ve got lots of goodies in store!
You’re awesome, Michelle! Always have been : )
Your blog speaks to me. I worked in the non-profit world and public policy for many years. Although it was rewarding in that I felt like it may be an avenue where I could make a difference – it never truly spoke to my heart. It was when I was working to support women’s issues that I realized my calling was to create safe, natural, organic skincare products. It’s amazing when you find your path how the doors open and you are sustained emotionally, spiritually, and financially. Thank you for your contribution.
Thanks for sharing your story Andrea. Joseph Campbell says “When you follow your bliss…doors will open where you would not have thought there would be doors, and where there wouldn’t be a door for anyone else.” The trick is to believe it!
I’m going to pay attention to this blog… I’ve been wondering all my life what to do when I grow up!
Jerry, you’re not alone! And you’ve come to the right place. This blog will come out every Wednesday. See you next week!
You have my full attention. Michelle.
Love it! Thanks for sharing. Starting a new path and finding the strength and courage to forge on.
Great blog Michelle! I love the photo of you from the your days of teaching at UCSC! My best to you!
Listening to my heart, and letting my true light shine, and following my own north star was disorienting when I was listening to whatever TV and music, and running around trying to prove myself in other’s eyes. It was tough. Your words and songs, and Diane Dreher’s book, energized my longing as a realistic possibility. Leaders lead by example and the power of your words from experience is palpable. Thank you for sharing.
if i could be anything i wish i was a person with the right to feel true down to my soul happy.
EVERYone has that right, so do you!
